What Have You Been Up to?

It’s been a long time since many of us have seen or heard from each other. What have you been doing? Inquiring minds want to know but only if you care to share!

  1. Well, I guess I’ll start it off with what I have been up to. Nothing too exciting but it’s filled the 20 years which have gone by rather quickly now that I look back at it.

I have lived in Michigan up until June of 2006 when I came to North Carolina. Here I have married my soul mate, which took forever to find! We live in a nice little home in Race City USA and enjoy our time together with our family and friends.

I have a son who is 11 years old and of course the light of my life. My husband and I are now hoping to have another child, God Willing!!

I work in a small Web design company close to home and really love what I do. I used to work at Chrysler in Warren and really hated what I did, but we needed to get by and that’s what you do when the family needs food, clothing and shelter. I really regret not having gone straight off to college and hope and pray my son won’t make the same mistakes I have made. The good thing is I pressed on and between raising my son and taking care of my sick mother for the last ten years I managed to go back to school and I’ll get my degree this Fall!! So Yeah for me, I am very proud. It took 20 years, but I finally did it.

I can’t wait to come back to see my family and friends for Thanksgiving! And I really look forward to seeing all of you whom are able to make it! Take care everyone!

  2. Hmmmm let’s see…

PROFESSIONAL: Went off to college (2). Finally got a degree in Television/Film Production. Moved to LA worked at CAA (creative artists agency) who reps high profile stars. Left that began teaching, realized how INCREDIBLY hard teaching was so I decided I could work as hard and make a lot more $$$ working back in film. So, went back to the business end of film and worked for Shapiro/West (managers/producers of Seinfeld). Decided after 1 year that no amount of money could replace the rewards I received from teaching. After working w/ people who made more $ than I could ever imagine existed, I discovered if you’re not a happy person no amount of money in the world will make you happy. Sooooo went BACK to teaching, upper grades, and have stayed there for 10 years. I taught in South Central LA for 9 years and having felt I have done my time “in the hood” I left and now teach in a lower income school that is very multiculturally diverse in LA. I am now going back to school to become a speech/language pathologist for kids. This will afford me the luxury of working my own hours = more beach volleyball and surfing.

PERSONAL: Married less than 2 years ago to someone I had been aquaintances w/ for a number of years. He is a wonderful human being whom I admire, respect and adore. As I like to say he keeps me grounded. We are complete opposites: he is quiet, reserved, and stable and I keep our lives from becoming to monotonous. We have no children and are still deciding if we are ready to “settle down” and become responsible.

FUN/anytime I’m not working: I LOVE beach volleyball (play 5 days a week in the summer – 3 days in the “CA winter”). I surf relatively frequently – 6’9″. My husband and I love wine and go to a lot of tastings. That’s one of the many reasons I love SoCal – great winerys. We enjoy traveling, although w/ the new house we don’t travel as much. We just bought a mid century modern house and we are currently restoring it from the previous owners “remuddle”. We have 3 “children”, a cat and 2 dogs.

All and all it’s been a fun rollercoaster ride since HS and I am looking forward to seeing everyone and feeling old ;p

  3. Wow, Sheryl! How exciting to have worked in film. Did you get to meet Seinfield? Who have you gotten to meet??

You can register with wordpress and then I think you are able to add pictures to your posts. Let me know if you can without registering please. It kinda makes things more exciting, I think. I’ve sent you an email link.

It was nice hearing about what you’ve done and I hope others will follow suit.

  4. Yes, I met a lot of people when I was in the business but they/it are overrated. It’s not as glamorous as it seems. The parties were extravagant and fun but you forget there is a REAL world happening out there. I only miss the great gifts 😉

  5. Personal: Immediately after college, met my future wife in N.B. at Hallmark of all places. Younger than me, dated all my friends younger brothers, so I lied and said I was dating a stewardess to avoid all the harrassment. Anyway, packed up my car and went as far west as the roads would take me and ended up in Pismo Beach, California for about three years, had an apartment on the beach, loved it. Came back to Michigan anyway, living in Chesterfied now, run into a few folks here and there and hang out with a few here and there, but life is mostly kids. Married for going on 12 years, three boys that keep us more than busy, play as much soccer as my kness can handle, boat as much as possible and try to enjoy life as it comes. My wife, God bless her, has put up with me for this long. Hopefully it continues.

Professional: Senior Business Intelligence Consultant is my title. Basically I work to live, that is the only way to explain it. No great career aspirations outside of being dad and husband. Wait until the kids move out before I become a workaholic. If my wife would be willing to give up her stay at home status and part time work gig, I would gladly switch.

See some of you soon. Take care – J

  6. Great to hear from you Jeff. It will be strange to see everyone!!

  7. Hey Everyone,

As most of you know Theresa Geck (Suprenant) and her husband Tom moved to N. Carolina the weekend of the reunion which is why they were unable to attend. The following is a letter I received from her when I went to close out the PO Box:

    Hello Missy!
Wow, 20 years! Can’t believe it! I still see 80’s hair styles all over the place (scary, it’s so in for the teenagers). Well, I’m sorry to say I won’t be coming to the reunion. I will be moving to North Carolina that weekend. I really enjoyed the last reunion at Zuccaro’s (even though my closest friends didn’t show, I still had fun). I know it was unbelievable that one minute the big white hall was there and gone the next! Zuccaro’s did a great job, and they will again for you.

Since I can’t make it I’ll share a bit of my life for you to share with anyone curious. I have four girls, ages 18 (yes 18!), 14, 11 and 5. My oldest was Bay Rama Princess 2006 her junior year at Anchor Bay High (20 years after me, I was on it in 1986), so she got to do all the parades for a year (Tracy Swanger-Vandermeer is head of the Bay Rama Committee). She’s the spitting image of me, everyone thinks I’m her sister (can you believe I got carded last week to buy liquor?). I guess I still look young! My 14 year old and 11 year old go to our old junior high (Middle School North) and my youngest is in kindegarten at MacDonald Elementary. I am still happily married to Tom Geck (it’s 15 years now!). He is still doing great with his masonry business (which is why we are moving south, more work to keep the business going), and he is a motorcycle police officer (so he gets to escort plenty of famous folks like the President, and do parades and motorcycle charity runs as well). Our life is crazy busy, but at least we still feel young and enjoy friends & family as much as we can.

Life has had it’s ups & downs, a couple of years of too much grief & sorrow with the passing of too many relatives. And then we’ve enjoyed just the simple life of country living, riding atv’s with our girls, playing softball & staying active, playing poker, camping, hanging at the beach, just being a family. Life has thrown a lot of curves at us, and we are in transition right now with our big move to North Carolina and a fresh start, a new chapter. ….
We had the most exciting and inspiring summer last year when we got to be a big part of the Extreme Home Makeover in Armada! My husband and his brother, Kurt, were the masons (Geck Masonry) who did the stone on the house (they even had Jeff, Todd & Mark Wargo on their crew), and Tom’s brothers, Jeff and Bob, were the rough carpenters (JAG Construction) to build the whole house. I made the cakes for the VIP party the day of the build (over 700 guests), got Eduardo Xol and Tanya McQueen from the show to try my cake, I made an exact replica of the house in cake for the Gilliam family to enjoy after the reveal, met all the designers & producers from ABC, and I even got a hug from Ty Pennington at the After-Wrap Party at Zuccaro’s! It was a crazy, sleepless week but worth all the insanity!!!

I have my house ( I designed it) up for sale, and it will be on the market all winter while I am down south. It’s a fabulous house with so many custom details, great for entertaining & raising a family (we designed it as our dream house with the thought we wouldn’t be moving again). We have 5 acres, with the best neighbors (Bonnie Holt and all the Gunsts), we back up to ABHS so we have all the baseball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis courts, track and everything right there to use. My house is listed on http://www.century21.com, under Marnie Ickes listings if you know anyone interested in a huge house (with separate in-law quarters…which could always be moved). Well, my crazy life is calling. I hope you get enough people to have the reunion, I’m sorry to miss it! Thanks for all your hard work (and the others, too) for putting it on (and the last one!) Enjoy all the fun! Maybe next one I could make a fabulous cake for the reunion (I’ve been doing events for 10 years now…I can compete with the Ace of Cakes on the Food Network). Take care Missy, I wish you great health & happiness! Theresa Geck
